Overview of workshop

This workshop presents a framework for designing evaluation and research into teaching at the level of a course. It provides a practical resource that can be used by teaching teams to address institutional and personal expectations of evidence-based quality teaching practice. Participants will engage in two structured activities demonstrating how the resources scaffold and support academics to engage in SoTL.

Specifically, participants will be introduced to:

  1. a way of thinking about the teaching component of academic work that is oriented to evidence-based quality enhancement
  2. a framework for embedding evaluation and research into curriculum design and delivery at the level of a unit of study (subject) and course (award degree) curriculum
  3. the CER framework website and resources available for download (


Target audience

Academic leaders (learning and teaching) responsible for assuring curriculum quality against the Higher Education Standards Framework. Leaders and/or academics who facilitate or lead teaching teams in design, delivery and quality assurance of course curricula.


Intended outcomes for participants

Participants will have opportunity to:

  1. Develop a research plan and an ethics application using the example ethics.
  2. Understand how to use the CER framework to ensure coordinated evaluation and scholarship activities for a course.
  3. Discuss how to use the resources available on the CER framework website.

Conference Sub-themes

This workshop connects directly to the challenges in Higher Education relating to ‘priorities set by government’, in particular Higher Education Standards Framework standards referencing scholarship, including as set out in the TEQSA Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Guidance Note. The workshop is particularly relevant to the ‘Academics – academic development’ sub-theme as the CER framework is developed as a method for addressing an increasingly complex and resource constrained SoTL research environment. The CER framework is designed to facilitate teaching teams to plan and implement SoTL focused on their course curriculum. It is also designed to provide a context in which early career academics can be supported to develop their SoTL capabilities through evidence-based practice and peer partnerships within/across the team, with participants given opportunity to discuss the role of distributed leadership when applying the CER framework.
